The celebrations of the Holy Week in Paraty date from the 17th and 18th centuries. During Holy Week you can admire the colonial sacred artwork and images that is kept hidden during the year in the Paraty Sacred Art Museum, in Santa Rita Church. Some of the priceless pieces that are taken in the Holy Week Processions in Paraty are the articulated "Lord of Steps", from the 18th century; the "Crucified Christ"; the Spanish "Our Lady of Loneliness" six feet effigy; and the "Lord of Green Cane" and "Our Lady of Sorrows", both dating from the 18th century.
The Holy Week in Paraty is also famous for the "Procissão do Fogaréu" (The Torches Procession). This ancient tradition has been revived since the 70s and it has become a distinctive part of the Holy Week in Paraty. The "Fogaréu" starts at midnight on Thursday 1st of April, and it symbolises the prison of Christ. Pilgrims carrying torch lights walk the cobble stone streets of the historic centre (with all the electrics light off) creating an incredible climate that transports you back in time.
There are endless options in colonial Paraty to live a different 2010 Holy Week. Come to celebrate Easter in Paraty!
